He was the president of the Brazilian Society of Interventional Radiology and Endovascular Surgery (SoBRICE) in 2009-2010. He has experience in Interventional Radiology (vascular and non-vascular), acting mainly in adult and pediatric hepatic-biliary interventionism (treatment of liver tumors, chemoembolization, radioembolization, TIPS, portal hypertension, biliary drainage, etc.), obstetric gynecology (uterine fibroids, gestational bleeding) and peripheral endovascular (aneurysms, angioplasties with or without stent implantation and embolization procedures in general).
He is the author of more than 70 scientific papers published in high impact journals and over 20 book chapters. He is also the author of the book “Interventional Radiology and Endovascular Surgery”, published in 2006 (Revinter); it is a national reference for the specialty and the launch of the second edition happened in 2017 with the “Tratado de Radiologia Intervencionista e Cirurgia Endovascular”. It’s the biggest and most important textbook in the specialty written in Portuguese language with 80 chapters (40 written by international collaborators and 40 renowned national collaborators).
In line with his pioneering experimental work developed at Harvard University (Boston - USA) and clinical trial at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), his main line of research is focused on the treatment of patients with symptoms associated with prostate enlargement due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). He developed and published, for the first time in the world scientific literature, the technique of Prostate Arteries Embolization (PAE) at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP under the supervision of Prof. Miguel Srougi and Prof. Giovanni Guido Cerri. Because of this visionary work, Prof. Carnevale organizes and provides training courses on the PAE technique in Brazil, Europe and the United States.
His scientific career also stands out for having integrated more than a dozen of thesis defense committees (masters and doctorate) and organized several scientific events in the field. He is also a professor and advisor at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo. He has been responsible for training more than 30 specialists in Interventional Radiology throughout Brazil.
